Riassunto: Nel 2014 è stata scoperta la nuova specie Paphiopedilum rungsuriyanum nel Laos settentrionale. Cresce su scogliere semi-ombreggiate tra 1000 e 1500 m di altitudine. Le piante sono state inizialmente scambiate per Paphiopedilum canhii, ma si distinguono per petali più larghi e colorazione rosso-viola intensa nei fiori. La specie è classificata nel sottogenere Brachypetalum o nella nuova sezione Laosianum, suscitando dibattiti tra gli esperti. Il nome deriva da “tempo di fioritura” e “aumento della crescita o sole del mattino”, in onore di Niwat Rungruang. L’habitat è stato saccheggiato, e la riproduzione artificiale è in corso per preservare la specie, poiché molte piante sono morte durante il trasporto o la coltivazione a Bangkok.
Abstract: In 2014, the new species Paphiopedilum rungsuriyanum was discovered in northern Laos, growing on semi-shaded cliffs at elevations of 1000-1500 m. Initially mistaken for Paphiopedilum canhii, it differs in having broader petals and intense red-violet coloration in the flowers. Classification debates exist, with experts placing the species in either the Brachypetalum subgenus or the new Laosianum section. The name honors Niwat Rungruang and derives from “flowering time” and “increase in growth or morning sun.” The habitat has been subjected to plundering, prompting ongoing artificial reproduction to preserve the species, as many plants perished during transport or cultivation in Bangkok.
